Fess Parker, who gained fame portraying Davy Crockett
for Walt Disney in the mid-1950s, became even more success-
ful as another frontiersman, Daniel Boone, in the 1960s. Like
Crockett, Daniel Boone was one of America's great folk
heroes. He lived in the North Carolina-Tennessee-Kentucky
area just before and during the Revolutionary War, and his
exploits were legendary. The stories in this series revolved
around Boone's encounters with Indians, both friendly and
hostile, his survey work and pioneering expeditions, and
his relationships with both his family and his friends.
The family included his wife Rebecca, his daughter Jemima,
and his son Israel. The friends were originally his traveling
companion, Mingo, and Cincinnatus, tavern-keeper of Boones-
borough, Daniel's home base. Only Cincinnatus remained
through the entire six-year run of the show. Later added
to the cast were young pioneer Jericho Jones; Gideon, a
black Indian; Josh Clements, a fur trapper; and Gabe
Cooper, a runaway slave living with the Indians.
